Q14.0 What do all those initials in WT references mean? There are dozens of these, but the most common are (many of the WTS books are also known by nicknames): ad Aid to Bible Understanding ce Life, How Did It Get Here - By Evolution or Creation? ev Evolution or Creation? g Awake (previously known as Consolation and Golden Age) is Is This Life All There Is? it Insight on the Scriptures jv Jehovah's Witnesses - Proclaimers of God's Kingdom om Organized to Accomplish Our Ministry pe You Can Live Forever in Paradise on Earth re Revelation - It's Grand Climax at Hand! rs Reasoning from the Scriptures tr The Truth the Leads to Eternal Life W Watchtower (also referred to as WT) yb Yearbook of Jehovah's Witnesses AS American Standard Version(1901; as printed in 1944) Dy Catholic Challoner-Douay Version(1750; as printed in 1941) JB The Jerusalem Bible(1966), Alexander Jones, gen. editor KJ King James Version(1611; as printed in 1942) Kx The Holy Bible(1954; as printed in 1956),Ronald A. This is oft heard in internet discussions - the derivation is simple:- JW -> Jay-Double-U -> JayDub There are further derivations - the shortening to simply 'dub' and the term used to describe the whole WatchTower World - 'jaydubiana'. A common net.jw term is 'postie' or 'posty' - this is a corruption of term 'apostate' which JWs use in a broad sense to mean any of the 5000000000 of the world who are not JWs, and in a narrow sense to exJWs. Some are, in various degrees of openness, attempting to convert the JW back to a usually mainstream religion. Others, like many self-help groups, are composed of people who've suffered at first-hand and are determined that they're troubles will not have been in vain, if they can help someone else through the trauma of exit. It's unusual amongst JW specific groups, but in the general counter-cult scene, some of the counselors and deprogrammers are full-time professionals charging for their services - this should be taken into account, but automatically to claim that someone is simply exploiting others' misfortunes is no more necessary than for any other counselor. Don't confuse exit-counselling (ethical) with forcible deprogramming (unethical, except in Jonestown or Waco scenarios, and becoming rarer in practice, and rarer still amongst ex-JW practictioners), but do watch for self-perpetuating analysis syndrome. Many cult-combating groups have a wide remit, and will act against any type of organization which exhibits cult-like behavior to the detriment of its members - this includes pseudo-scientific or medical groups, multi-level sales companies & political groups. Once one has learned the anatomy of one cult, the rest are variations on the theme. Sometimes one can learn more about the cult he is familiar with by examining the workings of another, just as learning French is a good way of knowing English better. --------------------------------------------- file: /pub/resources/text/apl/jw/jwfaq.07.txt
