NR #1996-040: For Immediate Release Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals Announces Speakers by Darrell Todd Maurina, Press Officer United Reformed News Service (March 13, 1996) URNS - The Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, an organization led by fourteen nationally-recognized evangelical figures alleging that American evangelical Christians are guilty of "embracing pragmatism and consumerism, with dependence on modern idols such as politics, marketing, sociology, and psychology," has announced the lineup of speakers for its April 17-20 leadership summit in the Boston suburb of Cambridge, Massachusetts. In addition to the members of the ACE Council, speakers will include PBS head Ervin S. Duggan; Dr. Wallace Schultz, senior preacher for the Lutheran Hour; Dr. Sinclair Ferguson, professor at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia; and Dr. Ravi Zacharias, president of Ravi Zacharias International Ministries. The four-day conference is organized around four main topics, each of which will be the subject of two papers and a panel discussion. On Thursday morning, Ervin S. Duggan, president and CEO of PBS, and Dr. David Wells, professor at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and author of "No Place for Truth; Whatever Happened to Evangelical Theology?" will present papers on the topic of "The Dying Culture." The afternoon session will feature papers on "The Truth of God's Word" by Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr., president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, and Dr. Gene Edward Veith, dean of the school of arts and sciences at Concordia University in Wisconsin. Later in the day, Dr. Luder Whitlock, president of Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, and Dr. Robert Norris, senior pastor of Fourth Presbyterian Church in the Washington suburb of Bethesda, Maryland, will moderate panel discussions on the same topics. Friday's session will follow the same format. In the morning session, Rev. Michael Scott Horton, president of Christians United for Reformation and Ferguson of Westminster Seminary will present papers on "Repentance, Recovery, and Confession." In the afternoon session, Dr. W. Robert Godfrey, president of Westminster Theological Seminary in California and ACE chairman Dr. James Montgomery Boice, senior pastor of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, will present papers on "Doctrine, Worship, and Life." The panel discussions that afternoon will be moderated by Dr. John D. Hannah, professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, and Dr. John H. Armstrong, president of Reformation and Revival Ministries. In addition, Norris will begin the summit with a Wednesday evening keynote address on the topic of "Sola Scriptura" following an introductory speech by Boice. The evening worship services on Thursday and Friday will be led by Schultz of the Lutheran Hour and Dr. R.C. Sproul, president of Ligonier Ministries, on the topics of "Sola Fide, Solus Christus" and "Sola Gratia." Rev. Alistair Begg, senior pastor of Parkside Church in Cleveland, Ohio, will lead the concluding worship service on Saturday morning on the topic of "Soli Deo Gloria." Zacharias will give devotional addresses at the beginning of the Thursday and Friday sessions. The ACE council expects to release a "Cambridge Declaration" in a formal signing ceremony on Saturday morning. Following the signing ceremony, conferees will have the opportunity to participate in an optional historical tour of Harvard University led by staff members at the school. Plans for the leadership summit were first drafted in late 1994. The conference site was selected to underline what evangelical Christianity once was and what it could become again. Founded in 1633, the town of Cambridge became the seat of Harvard College and the collegiate connection made it a center of both academic and ecclesiastical life in Puritan New England. By 1648, the town had given its name to the Cambridge Platform of church polity drafted to govern the Puritan churches of New England and within a few years after that was recognized as the leading seat of Christian scholarship in America. According to ACE, the decline of Harvard from being a center of academically rigorous evangelical Christianity to its modern condition as a center of liberalism and secularism should serve as a warning to modern evangelicals. "In recent years, many even of the most conservative Protestant churches have lost their faithfulness to the Bible in both faith and practice. Perhaps unknowingly, but certainly unmistakably, the evangelical movement is now returning to the errors of the liberal Protestants of the last century," according to ACE council's promotional literature. "Thus, the great need of the moment is to recover the biblical, apostolic witness which alone can restore power and integrity to the church as we make our way into the third millennium."
