S U N D A Y S N I P P E T S (tm) # 2 9 21 May 1995 Casper ten Boom mini-biography ------------------------------ "Casper ten Boom [of Haarlem] was a watchmaker whose expertise was known throughout the Netherlands. He enjoyed the precision work required in his profession...but nothing pleased him more than discussing the truths of the Bible. "Many of us know him as the father in Corrie ten Boom's _The Hiding Place_ [book & film]. Because of that story's time frame, we know more about his death than about his life. His martyrdom - he died shortly after the Nazi's arrested him for hiding Jews in his house - is instructive, but not more so than his 84 years of life. "Casper ten Boom, as might be expected, was a man of punctuality and exactness, but he was also a man of grace. He did not work on Sundays except to wind all the clocks...He believed the Bible was relevant for every part of life. His shop was opened each morning with prayer. He read the Bible with his family after every meal. That these were not merely religious trappings we can be sure because his house and his heart were open to anyone in need. That he was a good mixer we can be sure because typical of the Bible classes he taught in his home was one which included an atheist, a fundamentalist, a liberal, a Roman Catholic, and a Calvinist. He was an encourager, always stimulating positive attitudes in his friends, and what a range of friends it was. "His harbouring of hunted Jews was but a natural extension of his faith. For him and his children (his wife had died by then), it was only Christianity as usual." by Charles Turner, published in the November '93 issue of _Tabletalk_ Magazine. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Sunday Snippets" is the trademark of G.
